Sending your kid to college is exciting and honestly, a little overwhelming.

There are so many dorm lists out there and most of them will have you spending way more money than you need to. As a mom of teens (and someone who believes in keeping things simple and realistic), I wanted to put together a list of what your child will actually use in a dorm.

Not the aesthetic extras. Not the “nice to have.”Just the things that make life easier.

My Personal Picks (What I’ve Actually Bought)

These are items I’ve personally purchased, used, or would absolutely buy again. These are the practical, everyday essentials that make a difference.

What Actually Matters

in a Dorm

If you’re trying to keep things simple, focus on this:

  • Comfort (sleep matters more than anything)

  • Organization (small space = clutter fast)

  • Easy food options (because they will be hungry at random times)

  • Basic life skills tools (laundry, cleaning, etc.)

Everything else? Optional.

❤️ A Note for Parents

This season is big. You’re not just packing a dorm, you’re preparing your child to take care of themselves.

You don’t have to get everything perfect. You just need to give them what they need to feel a little more prepared.
