Week 5: Building Habits & Strengthening Bonds – Even in the Chaos

🍽️This week felt like a whirlwind! Between getting ready to leave for a trip on Friday, juggling schoolwork, play rehearsals, and school events, squeezing in family dinners was a real challenge. To top it off, my daughter had her freshman orientation (how did that happen so fast?!) and my son was a presenter that evening. I was so tempted to grab takeout after the event, but instead, I opted for a super simple meal at home with what I had on hand. Sometimes the easiest option is right in your own kitchen.
In my efforts to streamline dinners without sacrificing connection, I’ve started meal prepping hamburger patties. It’s been a game-changer—whether I’m making quick cheeseburgers or chopping them up for tacos, having something ready makes dinnertime less stressful and more consistent that I have made myself. It keeps things a little healthier and more cost effective.

🥘As I move through this journey of 100 family dinners, I’ve noticed subtle shifts in my kids. My daughter now automatically sits down at the table, making it clear that this new habit is sticking. My son? Well, he’s still pushing back a little—but nowhere near as much as he did in the beginning. He knows this is our new normal.
🍔Family dinners aren’t just about the food—they’re about connection. Studies show that kids who regularly eat meals with their family are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and lower rates of substance abuse and depression (The Family Dinner Project, 2021). I like to think of these dinners as investing in my relationship with my kids—like putting money in the bank for a rainy day. When tough conversations or discipline arise, that foundation of connection and trust is already there.

🍝Even in the busiest weeks, taking time to sit down—even for a quick, imperfect meal—makes a difference. This week we managed to have 4 meals together. I am definitely counting having Panda Express at the airport as a meal. We sat down and ate together! Here is to 16 Dinners for 2025!! 🥪 🌮 🌯
What small adjustments can you make to prioritize connection with your family this week? 🍔🥗💕
